What is congestive heart failure?

Congestive heart failure (CHF), often simply called heart failure, is a chronic and progressive condition where your heart can't pump enough oxygen-rich blood to meet your body's needs. It doesn't mean your heart has stopped working, but rather that it's not pumping as effectively as it should.

Think of your heart as a pump that circulates blood throughout your body. In heart failure, this pump weakens or becomes stiff, leading to a backup of blood and fluid. The term "congestive" refers to this fluid buildup in different parts of the body.
