A catalyst accelerates a chemical reaction by providing an alternative reaction pathway with a lower activation energy. This new pathway allows a greater fraction of reactant molecules to possess the minimum energy required for the reaction to occur upon collision.  Consequently, the reaction rate increases without the catalyst being consumed in the overall process. The catalyst does not alter the reactants, the products, or the equilibrium of the reaction; it simply speeds up the rate at which equilibrium is reached.
