Hazing is any activity expected of someone joining or participating in a group that humiliates, degrades, abuses, or endangers them, regardless of the person's willingness to participate. Often disguised as "tradition" or "team building" in contexts like sports teams, fraternities, or military units, it typically involves a power imbalance where established members subject newcomers to physical exhaustion, alcohol abuse, or psychological stress. While proponents sometimes argue it builds unity, hazing is widely recognized as a harmful practice that can lead to severe physical injury, long-term emotional trauma, and even death, leading many jurisdictions to classify it as a criminal offense.
