What is MDS?

MDS, or Myelodysplastic Syndromes, is a group of rare blood cancers characterized by the bone marrow's inability to produce enough healthy, functioning blood cells. Essentially, the "blood factory" begins creating immature or poorly formed cells that die in the marrow or shortly after entering the bloodstream, leading to low blood counts (cytopenias). Symptoms often include fatigue, shortness of breath, and an increased risk of infections or bruising. While it primarily affects older adults, the severity varies significantly; some cases remain stable for years with supportive care like blood transfusions, while others can progress into Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).
